AOC rolls out new Aire Black LED monitor

AOC rolls out new Aire Black LED monitor
AOC has a spanking new Aire Black LED monitor for the masses, although this time around, they won’t be too large of a size that makes it easy on your eyes if you have plenty of information to display. What it does, however, is offer a budget-friendly alternative coming in screen sizes of 20”, 22”, and 23”. Boasting of a glossy piano-black monitor, these will also be more than proud of being called one of the world’s slimmest display panels.

You can expect to see some bonus features on this all-black model such as embedded Screen+ software that lets you divide the screen into four different self-contained work areas – and we don’t suppose having a social network run on one of them all the time is out of the question.

The Aire Black LED monitor, as previously mentioned above, will ship in 20-inch, 22-inch and 23-inch sizes, going by the model numbers e2043Fk ($129), e2243Fwk ($149) abd e2343Fk ($179)m respectively. Other hardware specifications will include a 50,000,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio, 5ms response time, and a DVI-D with HDCP input that makes your HD viewing experience a cinch.

Acer’s GN245HQ NVIDIA 3D Monitor review

Acer’s GN245HQ NVIDIA 3D Monitor
For those who want a 3D monitor, Acer has the GN245HQ, a 24-inch monitor.

Of course, there are a lot of other 3D monitors out there, but what makes this different is that the infrared emitters that control the shutters of the 3D glasses are built-in the monitor instead of working with the USB IR emitter. This is different than NVIDIA’s 3D Vision system, and it frees up another USB slot.

Other features include a 120Hz refresh rate LED backlight and 1920 x 1080 (full HD) native resolution.

The Acer GN245HQ will be released in Europe around February for about $585.

Samsung SyncMaster 2233SW LCD Monitor review

Latest Samsung SyncMaster LCD monitor, the 2233SW – a Full HD screen has a 1920×1080 resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio. The lack of HDMI connectivity is a bit disappointing, but this is still a large LCD monitor.

Recent Samsung LCD monitors are very stylish and the SyncMaster 2233SW this trend. It has a glossy black bezel with a clear plastic extruded along the bottom edge. A soft blue LED just below the Samsung logo on the bottom of the screen completes the stylish package, with a round base. Light tends to reflect on the surface of the ring, though the screen itself is not glossy, so it is ideal for use in an office environment. We did not like the controls on the right side of the monitor, which is difficult to read labels and buttons require a firm pressure.

The Samsung SyncMaster 2233SW holder is difficult to connect with an awkward ball link on the bottom of the monitor is pushed into the position with great force hinge. The ball joint into place is not like most other LCD monitors, instead, is wedged in place. While holding the LCD firmly once connected, the standard does not allow the monitor to or increased, nor leave much to tip.

The monitor has a 5ms refresh rate, making it one of the faster 22in screens on the market. The lack of HDMI connectivity limits the Samsung SyncMaster 2233SW used for high-definition gaming, although it performed well in our fast-motion tests – only a small gap was present and there was no noticeable ghosting problems when viewing action movies and PC games.

Color and contrast are excellent. The mentioned dynamic contrast ratio is 15,000:1, while the typical contrast ratio is 1000:1. Black levels are rich, detail is excellent and both light and dark contrasts showed with great distinction in our DisplayMate tests. The SyncMaster 2233SW also has accurate colors and saturation levels and produces a bright, sharp image with no evidence of backlight bleeding.

It is worthwhile to explore the on-screen menus as Samsung has included many useful features, led by MagicColor and MagicBright. MagicColor increases clarity, perfect for viewing images while MagicBright is a set of pre-set color modes, including sports, movies, dynamic contrast, text, internet and games. In a normal office environment, we found the ideal mode to Internet settings, although the colors produced in some of the other modes are excellent, with no over-saturation. Text is accurately represented with a minimal deviations and to the native 1920×1080 resolution of the Windows desktop looked great.

Our only real complaint lies with the vertical viewing angles, which can be improved. Fortunately, the horizontal viewing angles are much better, with no noticeable color shift.

The back of the Samsung SyncMaster 2233SW has an etched flower design. The LCD monitor includes DVI and D-Sub ports, but disappointingly there’s no DVI cable included in the package.

Nine-Inch Touch-Screen USB Monitor is a Great Sidekick

Nine-Inch Touch-Screen USB Monitor is a Great Sidekick
Would you pay $230 for a nine-inch auxiliary touch-screen monitor? Nope, me either, but that doesn’t stop the iMo eye9 from being pretty damned neat. It hooks up via a single USB-cable and gives you a 1024 x 600 screen off to one side on which you can place all the essential little windows that usually get lost behind less important stuff, like work.

The selling point is the touch capability, which should let you just reach across and quickly update your Twitter, say. It also comes with a 1.3MP webcam, which slots into a standard jack-socket on the monitor’s edge. That means you can push Skype calls off to the side while you get in some serious solitaire time.

The iMo eye9 comes with a stand to hold it horizontal or vertical, and you can also spring for an ugly-but-useful flexible mounting-arm with a suction cup on its base ($40).

Apart from the price, there’s a lot to like (although remember the touch-screen is resistive, not capacitive). If you already have a 10-inch tablet computer though, there are apps available to do this for you. And one last tip: Trying to use a touch-screen alongside a mouse-driven screen will confuse you, fast. I sometimes use my iPad like this, but it drives me crazy.

Acer teases the crowd with a couple more LCD displays - the 21.5" H223HQbmid and the 24" H243Hbmid. Both models have a different resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 compared to many other LCD monitors which feature 1,920 x 1,200 resolution instead. Well, at least they're able to be used as full HD displays for your entertainment needs - that's what is most important, right? Prices for the 21.5" H223HQbmid and the 24" H243Hbmid will stand at €250 and €330, respectively. Good thing Acer did not forget to throw in the HDMI port, or that would surely be a pity if it went missing.
