OLPC XO-1.75: touchscreen and ARM processor

OLPC XO-1.75: touchscreen and ARM processor
Directly from the blog of the OLPC foundation comes the news of the use of low-power ARM processor on upcoming OLPC XO-1.75 devices. Among the new features including full support for the multitouch touchscreen technology.

Sometime ago we reported the news that the development of the Sugar OS operating system with support for multitouch was well under way. The first devices to benefit from this feature, we had expected, was XO-1.75 modeling, expected in 2011. During the CES 2011 in Las Vegas, just ended, the One Laptop Per Child foundation has announced its intention of using ARM processors for the new OLPC XO-1.75.

Recall that this is a model with 8.9-inch display and touch-sensitive will be equipped, likely, with a processor from Marvell Armada 610 1GHz operating frequency. According to figure released by the company, this is a motherboard that will limit consumption to 2 watts, strategically important choice for the class of devices we are talking about. Interesting news, then, whereas, pending the OLPC XO-3 total touch model (not before 2012), children can take advantage of multitouch technology that will allow them to use the device more intuitive and immediate.

Clearly, the foundation’s efforts are concentrated for lowering consumption. The goal is to share dropping below 1 watt since the laptops are intended for areas where electricity is a very valuable asset and reload operation cannot be a simple solution. OLPC XO-1.75 is expected in the first quarter of the year. As usual, the sale price is particularly low and, according to the latest news, should be under 100 dollars. Will be made available probably a cheaper version without a multitouch functionality.
